Red Light Therapy — Questions & Answers

Which wavelengths does red light therapy use, and which are best?

The most researched wavelengths are 630–660nm (red, for skin) and 810–850nm (near-infrared, for deeper tissue, muscle and joint recovery). Dermfix RLF panels offer 7 wavelengths — 480, 630, 660, 810, 830, 850 and 1060nm — so you can target both surface skin and deep tissue from a single device.

How much power (irradiance) do I need?

For effective home use, aim for roughly 40–100 mW/cm² at a realistic 15cm distance. Every Dermfix RLF panel is independently spectrometer-tested — from 82 mW/cm² on the RLF750 up to 92 mW/cm² on the RLF6000 at 15cm — with the readings published on each product page.

How do I choose the right panel size?

For the face and small areas, choose the compact RLF750 or the Halo LED. For half-body coverage, the RLF1500. For full-body treatment, the RLF3000 or RLF6000. Larger panels cover more of the body at once, which means shorter sessions.

What is the difference between red light and UVB — which do I need?

Red and near-infrared light supports skin, recovery and general wellbeing with no UV exposure. UVB narrowband (311nm) is a targeted phototherapy for specific skin conditions such as psoriasis and vitiligo. Dermfix makes both — choose red light for wellness and recovery, or UVB for those conditions.

Are Dermfix panels CE certified and safe?

Yes. Dermfix devices are CE-tested to EN 60335-2-27, the correct standard for skin exposure to optical radiation above 780nm. Dermfix is an EU manufacturer based in Austria.

Do you ship across the EU, and are there customs charges?

Yes. Dermfix ships from EU stock to all EU countries, so there are no customs or import charges for EU buyers. Free shipping applies on EU orders over €400.

What warranty do Dermfix panels come with?

All Dermfix RLF panels and the Halo LED come with a 3-year warranty as standard — above the typical 2-year EU minimum.

Red light mat or panel — which should I choose?

Panels are more powerful and better for the face, targeted areas and standing full-body sessions. Mats wrap around the body for hands-free, lie-down treatment of the back or larger areas. Dermfix offers both.

What time of day should I use red light therapy?

This is not critical. Some users prefer early-morning sessions for energy, others in the evening, and some before or after training for performance and recovery. We recommend experimenting to find a protocol that suits your daily routine.

Should I use eye protection?

Yes, eye protection is recommended because the LEDs are very bright, although the wavelengths themselves are not considered dangerous. If you choose not to use protection, do not stare directly into the LEDs.

Can I use the panel in a sauna, bathroom or outside?

Standard Dermfix RLF panels are IP20 rated and not suitable for bathrooms, saunas, outdoors or anywhere with water or steam. Suitable areas include bedrooms and living rooms. For damp or hot environments, use our IP65-rated RLF SPA panels.

Can I use red light therapy in summer?

Yes. Red light contains no UV-A or UV-B, so it can be used in a safer, more regulated way than natural sunlight, and is suitable throughout the year for energy, muscle recovery and skin support.

Why are the LEDs different colours?

The RLF units use dual-chip LEDs so the 7 wavelengths are spread as evenly as possible across the panel. Each LED combines two wavelengths, which creates the colour differences you see.

Can I wear clothing during treatment?

Ideally not. Red and near-infrared light is blocked by clothing. We recommend clean, dry skin with as little clothing as possible and no lotions or creams (apply those after treatment).

What are the pulsing settings for?

Pulsing rapidly switches the LEDs on and off (0–9999Hz), similar to a strobe. Dermfix includes it to future-proof the panels, but considers it an advanced-user feature and does not recommend it for most users due to limited clinical guidance.

What are Smart Modes?

Smart Modes are one-touch presets for quick everyday use, with set wavelength percentages and times detailed in the instruction manual. They are the quickest, easiest way to use the devices.
